Too complex
The SDM configurator is very difficult and requires even changes to the vista settings before it works. The automated configurator is not very reliable and I got intractable configuration errors preventing good operation. After several failed attemps and factory resets, it finally worked with a basic configuration. Unfortunatly, it is so complex and obscure that now I am reluctant to turn on the features I bought this device for.

entry level business grade router
My old Linksys router broke after 5 yrs of use and I had a hard time finding a good replacement unit that works w/ my wireless router acting as AP. I went with this entry level Cisco because I figured Cisco would give a good warranty and product. Well, it has 1 year warranty so don't expect the 3+ yrs warranty coverage (ie some D-link / Netgear routers still have that kind of warranty).

It comes with a CD with the graphics interface software to configure the router. I don't think it's compatible with Vista because the words in the menu would not show up fully. Luckily my brother was able to use command line to configure the router to work.

In short:

Pro - fast router when you're not using Vista. Lots of options to program this thing if you know how to do it.

Con - not sure if the software is Vista compatible. Kinda expensive if you ask me.

The most reliable part of my network
I am a software engineer who sometimes thinks he's a network engineer too. I run one commercial and one private system from home, with DNS, web, and e-mail service for each, and have a commercial broadband connection through Verizon Online DSL with 5 static IP addresses. After spending days reading specs and reviews of various pro-consumer routers, SOHO routers, and enterprise routers, and after having experienced downright horrible router software and performance from home/consumer routers, I decided on going with a Big Name and it's been a WONDERFUL investment.

I am comfortable working on all kinds of UNIX systems, so I am very comfortable with setting things up using a command line through telnet and ssh or by transferring files with scp. This router uses standard Cisco IOS software and there was a real wealth of documentation available on the web, and I was able to get up and running without purchasing any additional books. Once everything was set up, it never needed to be touched, and the router has been chugging along with no hiccups and at full speed.

What I had was:
- a pool of 5 static WAN IP addresses from my ISP
- an internal 192.168.x.x network
- web/email/dns/ntp/etc. servers on the internal network
- ethernet connections for everything (I have a separate DSL modem)

I wanted a router that:
- was straightforward for a competent network engineer to configure
- could implement NAT the way I wanted to
- was totally silent (no fans!)
- would not flake on me
- had a firewall

I got more than I wanted. This router also:
- stores its identity/configuration in a single file, which I can archive
- supports SNTP (only), so it gets its time from my local NTP servers
- does a lot more than I need/use

All in all, I am writing from the point of view of an advanced user, and this advanced user finds the router to be very solid, straightforward to configure, and powerful enough in terms of both functionality and processing power for my uses. I do have one gripe having nothing to do with the router per se - I have spent hundreds of dollars looking for a good wifi access point, and I wish I spent a bit extra for the Cisco 851W instead after my experiences. Right now I'm using a D-Link DGL-4300 which is working really well though, so I'm not as regretful as I was before I found the 4300.

A very solid router but certainly not for amateur
As a home user, after upgrading my broadband to 6.0mb/s from Comcast, both my netgear and linksys routers were overwhelmed and couldn't cope up with all the activities for the 5 computers, Xbox360 and Slingbox in the house. After researching all the business class routers, including Netgear, Linksys, Sonicwall and others. Finally, I've decided that Cisco is the best product that would solve my problem. Knowing that this is a sophiscated product, I ordered the most basic router without wireless access (hence less variables to configure). Amazon has the best price among all the websites though you certainly don't get any type of technical support from them. As expected, the router requires some professional knowledge to configure. Being a home user, I only changed very few settings through the SDM software that came with the router and it worked very well within my network. The performance of the router is impressive and I am getting the same download speed if I connect my PC directly to the modem. With all the loaded activities in the house, the CPU usage was just around 40%. This router certainly is of professional quality and doesn't even warm up after leaving it on all the time.

On the flip side, I found that the user interface (SDM) to manage the router is a little over complicated. It could be much more simplier but is still acceptable. The command line interface through the console port is definitely for professional who knows exactly what they are doing. Through the command interface, you can get almost all status and configuration from the router. I dare not to modify any configuration using the console interface because I'm not sure what I'll be changing. In addition, this router is 4 times more expensive than the ones you can get from local retail stores. Overall, I would recommend this router if you need the quality and performance. Otherwise, stay with the consumer products from Linksys or Netgear.

Review of product and transaction
Product was exactly what i needed and priced significantly lower than i could find elsewhere. Transaction was seemless and processing and shipping were both quicker than expected.

Works as expected, no problems so far
Not much to say really. My Dad and I ran this cable through a floor and two walls and it was very easy to maneuver throughout the process. The connectors are also very easy to plug in, and to remove, and speed wise, I'm thrilled! Much better than my failing Wireless Adapter. Thanks Amazon!

Long Long Cord
I bought this a while back and it did it's purpose. I don't use it anymore since I got wireless internet access but it is a quality product.

Well made, great price!
Don't go to Best Buy and pay that 200% mark-up. These cables are just as good, if not better. You won't be disappointed by the quality, and the length available here for a fraction of the retail price makes them a bargain.

Frankly, the big box stores should be ashamed that they mark up items like this so much. The real quality and bargains are found online, with items like this one.

Solid, reliable router.
I bought a Dynex DX-E401 to network 2 XP computers at home. Plugged in the power and ethernet cables and both computers were online. Didn't even have to use the install disc.
You can set your firewall, port forwarding, etc, via the browser, but I have a firewall in my modem, so I turned the router firewall off.
I did encounter a small problem with the password, but as another reviewer noted, just hold the reset 15-20 seconds to wipe the old password and reset to defaults.

The router has been running nearly 24/7 for a month without any problem.
I liked it so well, I recommended Dynex to a friend after they purchased a bad router of another brand name. Same "plug it in and go" ease with that one too.

Bad purchase.
After setting up this router, it would not connect to the internet. I, then decided to disconnect the router and try to connect directly through the modem, but I could not connect on the computer with which I had tried to set up the router, but I could with my other computer. Since I had bought the router from an "unauthorized" dealer, Dynex would not give any tech support. Dealer had no idea what to tell me, he was unfamiliar with Vista. I then contacted Dell who manufactured my computer. The tech at Dell could not resolve the problem, so he conferenced with me with my internet provider. The two of them could not work out the problem. Finally, I restored my computer to the settings from the day before, rebooted the computer and got my internet back. The router is now in my trashcan. Where it belongs, as far as I'm concerned!

Surprisingly good
Usually I don't purchase "no name" products, and Dynex is not very well known. I purchased this product in desperation - my brand new Linksys router stopped after 2 days of erratic work, and I was in the middle of urgent work and needed quick replacement. This was the only "other" brand available at local Best Buy store.

I was very positively surprised - it took me not more than 5 minutes to make this router working, virtually without any setup except defining the ISP type (dynamic). Works very well and stable.

Later I did some tweaking with firewall settings. Highly recommended.

JUNK!
I bought this product to replace a Linksys router that failed. The D-Link EBR 2310 keeps disconnecting from the cable modem every 5-10 minutes. D-Link knows about this problem and they can not fix it. Do not waste your money. I'm going back to a Linksys.

Perfect For What I needed!
Very easy to install and use. I got this so that I could have my PC (Dell XPS 410) and XBOX 360 connected to the internet at the same time. I have 2 tips for you:

1. If you have VISTA, DON'T run the CD. VISTA can detect a new network. All you need to do is, connect your modem to the primary port, then your computer and other devices to the numbered ports. That is it, that's all I did and everything works great.

2. Dont forget you will need a cable for any other things you want to connect. The unit comes with one (short) cable-so you can connect your modem to your router, then your pc to the router, but that 2nd pc, or 360, or whatever you'll need another cable. Suprising how many forget this :)

Its a great router, price is good, easy set up works great. Recommended!

I am not happy with your return service. I made mistake ordering wired Router while I need wireless one, but the seller refused to return the router or replace it with wireless one.

Let Me Explain
I bought this a while back. It arrived in great condition and looked great. I had a lot of trouble setting this up on my computer. It was hard to get tech help and it currently sits in my closet. I went and bought a Lynsys a few days later. Maybe I am just not intelligent enough to hook this up but it didn't work for me.

Truly Plug and Play
No problems at all. This little router is coupled with a D-Link gigabit switch and I had nothing to do except hook up the ethernet cables and the power cords and in less than 10 minutes everything worked well and has not had one failure or surprise. The two D-Links apparently recognized each other and communicated freely because all is working very, very well. I am exceedingly happy with this purchase.

Not what I was told
I was told that an uninterruptible power supply was the only thing that would protect my devices plugged into an ungrounded outlet, that a "line conditioner" like this one, that would even out any spikes, dips, or surges, was my only line of defense, that all the surge protectors and GCFI fixtures in the world wouldn't do what this thing does, epecially since most electricians wouldn't even bother with the job of ripping out 60 year old wiring and replacing it with grounded circuits, were anyone able to afford such an overhaul.

But upon receipt of this device I noticed right away that the red light for "wiring fault" was lit up and the instructions said, to my shock and dismay, that this thing doesn't protect me either unless plugged into a grounded circuit! So, other than monitoring my voltage and providing battery backup for the extremely rare power outage in my area, this is a power strip.

Great feature rich UPS
I bought this because of the value and its full features. I connected it up to my iMac running Leopard and all the needed control was available in the energy preferences - no software to load or conflict. I wanted a unit that had automatic voltage regulation (AVR) and a minimal time under power backup. This unit fit all of these criteria. I plan on buying another when I purchase a new flat panel TV (got my eye on a Sony XBR) and this is cheap insurance.

Runs Hot
It works okay but runs quite hot even under minimal load, on AC power, which means it's something of a power waster. The equivalent APC models stay cool by comparison.

no brainer, it works
It has a non-annoying buzz when the power supply is off and keep modem, router, Voip boxes and printer working for the time being.

Just what I needed
This unit says it'll power my PC for 17 minutes. Of course, I shut down the moment power is lost (it'll auto shut down in 5 minutes). The unit is then used to keep power on my cable phone and router. I can go portable at that time. I suspect that I have at least an hour of power (just a guess) with the cable phone and router.
If you like info during an outage, get the unit with an LCD readout. This one requires your computer to tell you battery levels. The LCD does not.
If this unit lasts 5 years like my last unit, I'll give it 5 stars.
